In July, Microsoft announced that Skype 7.0, otherwise known as Skype Classic, would no longer function after September 1st 2018 and users would have to upgrade to Skype 8.0. The problem is that many Skype users don't like, if not hate, the interface of the 8.0 version as it has minimal settings and removes the Comptact View, which allows you to split chats into their own Windows.
Thankfully, Microsoft has granted a reprieve and in a Microsoft answers forum post spotted by Thurrot.com, Microsoft has officially pushed back the date that Skype Classic will no longer function. Microsoft has not stated how long we will be able to continue using Skype Classic, but has stated that they are 'extensding support for Skype 7 (Skype classic) for some time. Our customers can continue to use Skype classic until then.'

To further confirm that Microsoft is listening to their user's feedback, a recent tweet by Peter Skrillman, Director of Design for Skype and Outlook, indicates that Microsoft is looking to bring back some iteration of the Compact View, or split screen, to Skype.
In a tweet posted yesterday, Skrillman is asking users to take part in a survey that shows different split screen implementations and provide feedback on them.
Skype Fans: Thanks for your feedback on split window view. We're working on bringing this back. Take this short survey so that we can build the best experience possible? (link: https://t.co/bTlx9jQwnI) https://t.co/bLomjp8CMa… Thank you for your time!
— peter skillman (@peterskillman) August 5, 2018This survey walks respondents through a series of videos that show different approaches to splitting the chat from the main Skype window into their own separate windows. While I personally, prefer a separate chat window for every open chat, some may find one of the offered solutions better.
For those who are hoping Microsoft brings back the Compact View, or at least something like it, you may want respond to their survey and give your opinion.
